This point about tutor engagement is borne out by my own experience of attending various synchronous webinars as a student - I've found it much easier to maintain focus where any contributions students make, eg in chat, get rapid acknowledgement and where tutors are able to respond.

One implication of this for online teaching design I think is its staff-intensiveness; I have got more engagement/enjoyment/learning out of online sessions and MOOCs which had sufficient tutor resources available to respond quickly to students (eg during a webinar, at least one if not two tutors additional to the person presenting at any given time; one to moderate chat/questions and perhaps another to deal separately with students' technical issues?) Yet more evidence for online learning sometimes being more staff-intensive than F2F rather than less!
